R. Sam Hoover is a physician attorney who has been practicing employment, health and elder law since graduating from Chicago’s Loyola University School of Law in 1994. He graduated Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Notre Dame, and has an M.D. from the University of Iowa Medical College. He was elected a member of Alpha Omega Alpha as a senior medical student. He completed a fellowship in Anesthesiology at the University of Minnesota and received a Master of Public Health degree (MPH) from the Harvard University School of Public Health.
Sam was instrumental in developing a Department of Anesthesiology at Lake Forest Hospital in Lake Forest, Illinois, and later served as its chairperson. (Lake Forest Hospital is now known as Northwestern Lake Forest Hospital.) While on staff at Lake Forest, he was the Chairperson of the Bylaws Committee responsible for drafting and proposing amendments to the hospital’s medical staff bylaws. He also served as Chairperson for the Quality Assurance and Service Committees, eventually becoming Chair of the Executive Committee and President of the medical staff, a member of the Board of Directors, and a member of the Boards’ Executive and Nominating Committees.
Since graduating from law school, Sam has concentrated on the areas of Employment, Health and Elder Law. He represents individuals, including physicians, in analyzing and litigating business and contractual issues. He counsels elderly persons and their families in areas related to elder and health law, such as end-of-life decision-making, wills and trusts, guardianships, insurance coverage, and health care litigation.
Sam frequently consults with other attorneys and is “Of Counsel” to several Chicago law firms. He has arbitrated and mediated contract and personal injury disputes in Lake and Cook Counties and has appeared before the Illinois Appellate Court.
Sam is a member of the Federal Trial and U.S. Supreme Court bars. He has been a member of the Health and Elder Law committees of the Chicago Bar Association and the Illinois State Bar Association. He is currently a member of Civil and Appeals Committee of the Lake County Bar Association. Although he lives in Illinois, Sam also is licensed in the District of Columbia and has clients in other states.
